Building a New Community: A Journey to a Simpler Life in Portugal

Building a New Community: A Journey to a Simpler Life in Portugal

The dream of escaping the hustle and bustle of modern life has led Digby and his family, along with several like-minded families, to embark on an inspiring journey. Together, they are creating a sustainable community in Alov, southern Portugal. This journey combines adventure, challenges, and the promise of a simpler, more connected lifestyle.

The Vision: Creating a Sustainable Community

The goal is clear: to establish a thriving community where families can live harmoniously with nature. The families aim to:

  • Educate their children in alignment with Portuguese regulations.

  • Grow their own food, fostering self-sufficiency.

  • Harness renewable energy, including solar power, for sustainability.

  • Build a supportive network, recreating the spirit of "it takes a village to raise a family."

With a two-hectare campsite as their new home, the group plans to make this vision a reality within a month.

The Journey: From Morocco to Portugal

Leaving Morocco

The family’s departure from Morocco was bittersweet. With discontent about schooling and a desire for change, they packed their belongings and embarked on a two-day road trip across Spain to their new home.

Challenges Along the Way

  • Port Delays: They faced a 4-hour wait at the port due to financial and logistical issues.

  • Ferry Delays: A six-hour delay turned their journey into a grueling experience.

  • Exhaustion: After 10-11 hours of driving, customs delays, and a late-night arrival, they finally reached their destination at 12:30 AM.

First Impressions of Portugal

Despite the challenges, the family’s arrival in Portugal brought immediate joy.

  • The Children: Thrilled by the beach and the spacious environment, they quickly immersed themselves in outdoor activities.

  • The Parents: Positive first impressions of the land and community sparked hope and excitement for the future.

Life at the Campsite

The new community space, a two-hectare campsite, will serve as the foundation for this collective lifestyle. Key features include:

  • Affordable Living: A long-term lease at approximately 300 EUR per month shared by five families.

  • Community Engagement: Opportunities for visitors, especially world-schooling families, to participate in activities and experience communal living.

  • Self-Sufficiency: Plans to grow food, manage water, and generate electricity sustainably.

Finding Like-Minded Families

Building a community requires finding the right people. Many of the families joining have been met through travel, Zoom interviews, and personal connections over the past year.

Key considerations:

  • Shared Values: A commitment to raising children in a natural, supportive environment.

  • Family Dynamics: Ensuring all family members, including kids, are happy and engaged.

The Kids: Thriving in a Natural Environment

For the children, the move has been life-changing.

  • Freedom to Play: Days are filled with outdoor activities, play, and natural learning.

  • Happiness: The contrast between Morocco and Portugal highlights how the environment can impact well-being.

With 14 children, aged 1 to 12, expected to join the community, the emphasis on natural learning and play ensures they thrive in this new lifestyle.

Reflections on the Journey

Digby and his family’s adventure highlights the rewards of taking bold steps toward a better life.

  • Lessons Learned: From logistical challenges to lifestyle adjustments, every experience has shaped their perspective.

  • The Power of Contrast: Experiencing different cultures and environments has underscored the value of their journey.

Looking Ahead

The community in Alov promises a lifestyle rooted in simplicity, sustainability, and connection. With plans underway and families arriving, this project is a testament to the strength of shared vision and collaboration.

As the community grows, it invites others to join, learn, and experience the magic of intentional living in the heart of Portugal.
